A minivan like the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna is the kind of vehicle families rely on for lots of seating and dependable safety. So, which one is right for you?

To help families in Ithaca, Elmira, and Corning decide, Maguire Honda of Ithaca puts them up against each other in this 2019 Honda Odyssey vs. Toyota Sienna comparison.

Honda Odyssey vs Toyota Sienna Interior

Both the 2019 Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna have three rows of seats and room for up to eight people. Folding and sliding seats make it easy to get to the back row or make extra cargo room.

The Honda Odyssey has an even more versatile interior though. The Magic Slide 2nd-row Seats™ can move side to side too. That lets you remove one 2nd-row seat and have a convenient center aisle or have space by the door so more passengers can quickly hop in the back.

The Toyota Sienna can also have a center aisle, but only if you opt for captain's chairs and permanent seating for seven people. It doesn't have flexible seating options or seats that can slide side to side.

Honda Odyssey vs Toyota Sienna Infotainment System

The 2019 Honda Odyssey offers a Bluetooth® compatible infotainment system. An 8-inch touchscreen in your dashboard can help you make hands-free calls and access your smartphone with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™.

The 2019 Toyota Sienna also has Bluetooth® compatibility, but its largest screen is only 7-inches across. Plus, while it offers Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ isn't even available.

Each van also offers a Rear Entertainment System with a drop-down screen, Blu-ray™ player, and an in-car PA system. The Honda Odyssey takes this a bit further though. You can communicate with passengers through either the rear speakers or their headphones.

CabinWatch® also lets you check on your passengers. It switches your dashboard screen to a real time video of the back rows.

The Toyota Sienna only lets you talk to your passengers through the speakers, plus you can't look in on how they're doing from your dashboard.

Honda Odyssey vs Toyota Sienna Safety

To keep your family safe, the 2019 Honda Odyssey was made with an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure. This intelligent design directs force away from the cabin during an accident.

Inside, you'll be protected by seven airbags, including Three-Row Side Curtain Airbags with a Rollover Sensor. The seatbelts also offer extra protection with an Automatic Tensioning System up front and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) in the 2nd and 3rd rows.

There are also lots of driver assistance features available. The Honda Sensing® looks out for your van and gives you more awareness with technology like:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keeping Assist System

With its solid design and safety features, the 2019 Honda Odyssey's Touring and Elite trims were awarded the 2019 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).1

The 2019 Toyota Sienna also has an advanced airbag system and its own driver assistance features. However, without the ACE™ Body Structure, it wasn't able to earn any safety awards from IIHS.
