The Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5 are the kinds of versatile SUVs that really come in handy when you're driving around the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier. They're both capable and stylish. Which one is right for you, though? To help drivers in Ithaca, Elmira, and Corning, NY, decide, the team at Maguire Honda looks at what they can do for you in this 2020 Honda CR-V vs. Mazda CX-5 comparison.

Performance & Fuel Economy

The 2020 Honda CR-V offers an exciting drive and an efficient performance. It runs on a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that gets up to 190 horsepower. This engine works with a fun and precise Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Sport Mode. This helps the CR-V get up to an EPA-estimated 28 city/34 highway MPG on its 2WD trims.*

The Mazda CX-5 also offers a smooth ride and solid fuel economy. However, it's not as powerful or efficient as the Honda. It's powered by a Skyactiv®-G 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that only offers up to 187 horsepower. Rather than a CVT, it opts for a Skyactiv®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission. With its larger engine and less efficient transmission, it can only get up to an EPA-estimated 25 city/31 highway MPG.

Interior Dimensions

Both the 2020 Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5 offer seating for five and lots of storage space. The Honda gives you a little more room to stretch your legs, though. For example, the back seat features 40.4 inches of legroom, while the Mazda only has 39.6 inches of rear legroom.

The main difference between them is how much cargo they can carry. The Honda CR-V has a larger trunk with 39.2 cubic feet of cargo room. You can also fold down the back seats and get up to 75.8 cubic feet of cargo room. The Mazda has a much small smaller trunk with only 30.9 cubic feet of space. While it also has folding seats, it can only offer up to 59.6 cubic feet of cargo room.

Safety

Whether you're on your way to work or dropping off the kids at school, you should always be confident in your SUV's ability to help keep you safe. That's why the Honda CR-V is built with an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. This frame is specifically designed to absorb the force from a collision and direct it away from the cabin.

Meanwhile, the interior is protected by six airbags, including side curtain airbags that feature a rollover sensor and cover both rows of seats. There's also lots of technology that can help you avoid an accident. Honda Sensing® comes standard and includes the following driver-assistance features:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow
  • Lane Keeping Assist System

The Mazda CX-5 comes with several similar driver-assistance features and uses six airbags to protect you. However, it's not as structurally sound as the Honda. Its frame wasn't scientifically designed to redirect energy like the ACE™ body structure in the CR-V.
